Tehidy Park Golf Club Captain, Simon Gregor and his team of Robert MacGregor, Ian Veale & Thomas Rowe (pictured above in a picture courtesy of Katherine Clotworthy) returned from the England Champion Club Event, which was played at Trentham GC (Stoke-On-Trent) in a respectable 12th place.
The event which sees all three gross scores count on both days is a showcase of some of the best amateur players in the country, and in fair conditions the scoring was predictably good. Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club set the pace on Day 1 when all three players recorded gross scores of 70 for a combined total of -6 par to afford them an impressive 10 shot lead.
The Tehidy team combined for a Day 1 total of +9, with MacGregor being the pick of the bunch, when he also signed for a gross 70 (-2). Veale was disappointed to sign for a 76 (+4), especially after registering 12 straight pars from the start, only to drop 4 shots in the next 5 holes. Rowe was slightly out of sorts with his game, which was compounded by an unusually 'cold' day on the greens leaving him to sign for a 79 (+7).
Day 2 dawned in a beautiful fashion, with the sun rising over the course. A gentle wind concentrated the mind, but once again some low scores were expected. Having finished Day 1 in joint tenth position the Tehidy team set about their task with the aim of breaking into a top six finish.
Despite signing for a round of 74 (+2) MacGregor was left to rue a three-putt from just 5 feet on the last green when a level par round looked more likely. Veale followed up with a 73 (+1), before Rowe could only improve his Day 1 effort by a solitary shot, his 78 (+7) once again adding up to a Day 2 team total of 225 (+9).
Southport & Ainsdale were relentless in consolidating their 10 shot lead when they posted a Day 2 total of 217 (+1) to give them a winning total of 427 (-5) and a 10 shot win over Hindhead (Surrey).
Sadly for the Tehidy team they were to slip outside of the top 10, eventually finishing in 12th place. Captain Gregor commented "From the moment we left Cornwall for the tournament the whole experience was a very rewarding one. The three lads represented the club with great dignity and pride, and whilst we are all a little deflated at missing out on a top 10 finish I am immensely proud of the whole CTC squad that secured our place in this showpiece event; I have had just the best time". He continued "I would also like to thank the caddies that gave up their time to make the trip, Andrew & Katherine Clotworthy for making the trip up from Portsmouth to cheer the team along, and for all the many well wishers that sent either a text, tweet or email".
